This international date promoted by UPU is to raise awareness of the fundamental role the postal sector plays in the everyday life and contribution to the social and economic development of countries.

The Universal Postal Union (UPU), formerly called General Postal Union, chose October 9th to commemorate its foundation as an organization in 1874.
Also, the goal was to effectively unify various services by creating a unique postal territory; focused on the reciprocal exchange of correspondence and strengthen the principle of free correspondence transit in the world.
In addition, this international date is intended to raise awareness of the fundamental role the postal sector has played in the everyday life and contribution to the social and economic development of countries.

According to data from the UPU, a specialized agency of the United Nations, postal services process and deliver an average of 368,000 million letters and 6,400 million packages every year.

Currently, the UPU is responsible for promoting and developing communication between nations, which leads it to “play a leading role, favoring the constant growth between postal services.
Unlike other international days, the Post Office is not celebrated under any particular theme every year, although they want to highlight the three strategic pillars that defines it: innovation, integration, inclusion”.
On the other hand, a famous family in Colombia established the first mail route between Spain and the New World.
In 1834, the Main Post Office in Santafé de Bogotá is organized under the administration of General Santander; the ‘estafetas’ are increased and three Main Post Districts are created, with their respective administrators who must reside in Santafé de Bogotá, Caracas and Quito.
By 1881, Colombia joined the General Postal Union, now called Universal Postal Union (UPU).
Aditionally, more than 150 countries celebrate this day every year in different ways.
Some promote new products and postal services while other companies in commemoration of this date, provide incentives to their employees for their remarkable client service.
